Clark's First Campout

Yep, it happened!  Clark had his first boy scout campout.  It seemed to go fine, which is good enough for me!

Earlier that day before Clark left, I headed to the school to help with an Easter Egg hunt for the 2nd grade.

Every spring the kids at the local schools take their standardized tests which are called SOLs. The 2nd grade teachers put practice SOL questions in each egg.  The kids could grab one egg and once they answered the question right could then pick out a piece of candy and go and find another egg.  They all enjoyed it I think.

After school Clark loaded up his stuff and we were off to the church to drop him off.

Clark rode over with the leaders and other boy scouts to the campsite.  It was a mile hike to the camping area from the parking lot.  Lee caught up with them later after work.  We had to go somewhere the next day so Lee went along to get Clark home early.  Otherwise Lee probably would have just stayed home.

While at home apparently it was funny face night.

I pulled out the sewing machine to add extra fabric to some skirts I bought the girls.  The skirts looked short online so I bought them size 14.  They wear size 7/8.  I knew I could make the waistband smaller really easy because it was an elastic waistband.  I often sew in waistbands for Shanna and Haley.  Even with buying size 14, the skirts were slightly too short.  They probably would have been fine, but I went ahead and added extra fabric to make them longer.  Also, now they'll be able to wear them for a couple of years. The girls wanted to use the sewing machine so I had them practice on pieces of paper. They practiced keeping the needle on the lines drawn on the paper.  I think Cal joined in on the fun too.

The scouts did foil dinners that night.  On the Wednesday night when Clark had his scout meeting, at the end the scouts assembled dinners for the night of the campout.  I didn't want Clark to do it because we had all of the food items at home, and I didn't want to pay extra for him to make a meal at the church.  In the end he didn't end up making one, but he and Lee each made one at home the next night.  Lee was so glad they made their own because when he arrived at the campsite, all the other foil dinners were frozen.  Clark and Lee ate about a half-hour after putting their dinners in the fire, but many boys didn't eat till around 8:30, 9 o'clock.  Lee said their dinners were really yummy too, so it worked out great for them!  Oh, and one boy was walking across a bridge and his sleeping bag fell off his backpack, down into the river below.  Thankfully one of the leaders brought and extra sleeping bag.  It was super cold that night!

The leaders put on an evening program.  Later the scouts played night games.  I loved playing night games when I was younger, and even in high school.

That night the temperatures dropped to the 30s or so.  They woke up to a little bit of snow too.  The cub scouts were all going to go on a five mile hike that morning.  Lee and Clark had to get back, so after breakfast they packed up and left.  Lee was very cold that night, especially his feet.  Clark was cold too.  Hard to know what to bring when camping the end of March!

Lee and Clark arrived home earlier than I thought they would.  We were soon off to my nephew's baptism that morning.  A post will be coming soon!
