Our second full day in Alaska we headed to the Mendenhall Glacier and Nugget Falls. We were able to walk out to a lookout point, hike to the falls and then also visited the center. The kids started on the Ranger Program as well and Elden received his 4th grader National Parks Pass.
Getting close to the glacier but not being able to touch it made me want to touch it. I thought we'd be able to walk right up to it. Apparently it recedes 400 feet a year. Wow!
And yes, even with one carryon each I fit in Hawaiia clothes and Alaska clothes!
Nugget Falls.
More cairns. One lady even took a picture of these.
People were kayaking out to the glacier. So fun!
The Mendenhall Glacier sites didn't take very long to see. We had lunch and headed to south Juneau to ride the tram up to Mount Roberts. I thought the tram ride would be about a half hour. Nope. Done in about 6 minutes.
We went on a little hike on Mount Roberts.
We also saw many bald eagles in Alaska. This one was being nursed back to health. It was fun to see one up close.
A replica of the size of an eagle's nest.
We learned about the Tlingit Indians as well. (For me the pronunciation I heard was "Cling-It") Fun seeing some carvings and such around the hike.
We also saw a movie about the Tlingit Indians and had dinner at Timberline on top of Mount Roberts.
We had some fun food at Timberline. Lee had the Wild Tongass Burger. I had the Bison Chili.
That night we surprised the kids by seeing Solo at a theater there in Juneau. It was super fun. Goodnight Alaska!
