We had back to back reunions in Utah this summer and it was wonderful. We planned it that way too. We are glad it worked out! After my Bartholomew reunion (click on older posts to see) we drove out to Spirit Lake, Utah for a Robertson reunion. Spirit Lake was in the middle of nowhere. It was somewhere of course, but it was out there. About 20 or miles on gravel roads to get there. It was such a fun place though. We arrived on a Friday evening, in time for a yummy dinner. We set up our tent there. It got so cold at night-around 45 degrees. Thankfully Lee's sister Lynn let us borrow a bunch of blankets. That was so great. I do not know how the pioneers slept in the cold!
Lee's dad brought his dirt bike and ATV. We used them a lot. My kids loved it. Saturday we all went out on rides. That morning I drove into town--about 45 minutes away--to get gas. We should have gotten gas before we came to the campground. But I didn't. I was sure we'd run out of gas going to and from church on Sunday and then leaving again Monday. I was gone for a couple of hours, but enjoyed listening to a book series by Beverly Lewis--Annie's People.
They found a chipmunk that wasn't acting right. The kids said it was sleeping. I'm no animal expert but chipmunks run around during the day....not sleep.
It was very pretty.
This was the first time I've ever ridden at ATV, AND I drove it too! I took the kids on several rides.
All of Lee's siblings were there! Family pictures were in order.
It's funny that we happened to have BYU gear on, ha ha. I cannot find this hoodie. I hope I didn't loose it...
Cousin pictures!
Here is Spirit Lake.
Some of the cousins! I wish we knew them better and lived closer!
Saturday night we stayed in one of the cabins. Lee siblings either rented a cabin or brought their RVs. With the expense of driving to and from Utah I didn't want to rent a cabin, so we brought a tent. Next time we'll save a little more and rent a cabin! Like I said it was so cold at night. In Keith's cabin there was a separate upstairs room that you entered from an outside stair case. They didn't know it was there till Saturday. Saturday night he let us sleep in there. It was great! And WARM! Thanks Keith and Julienne! Also, each night two siblings were in charge of dinner. Keith and Julienne and Lee and I were in charge of Saturday night. We had bbq sandwiches. I know you wanted to know that!
Sunday after church we met at a park to eat our lunch and then we drove around. This was a geological loop by Flaming Gorge.
you
And here is Flaming Gorge.
We stopped at a visitors' center that had a great overlook.
Some wild goats.
Grandma and Shanna.
Monday morning Marv invited my girls to come have pancakes with him and Lynn at their RV. The girls LOVED it. The rode over with Marv on his ATV. Elden and I joined in too a little later.
Taking selfies while Clark is steering. Maybe not a good idea, but we didn't wreck!
Lee brought all of our bikes. The kids enjoyed riding around on those and Lee and I went on a bike ride or two also. It was a lot of work for Lee, but I am really glad we brought all the bikes!. You're the best Lee-THANKS!
We spent a good part of the day on Monday at the lake. Nathan beat me to it and rented the canoe for the day. Thanks for letting us use it Nathan.
Lee's sister Sue rented a paddle boat which the kids enjoyed.
I am out on the canoe ride with a couple kids and Lee.
Lee was very kind to go out on this raft with Haley. He got pretty wet, and the water was cold.
A few of the kids went swimming though! Some of mine did too.
We had a great time visiting and hanging out. We left Monday night after dinner. Carl, Lee's brother, made some yummy, yummy dutch oven cobbler. I might have to ask him again for the recipe or search one out. He told us how to make it, but I can't remember every step. Just like with the Bartholomew family reunion, it was sad to go and say goodbye to Lee's family.
A couple hours later after we left we stopped to refuel. Our van had a great coat of dirt on it.
Monday night I drove all night and got us through Wyoming. Lee started driving around 5 am or so. The van had been vibrating and we weren't sure why. About 6am Monday morning Lee heard the front right tire flapping on the pavement and thankfully there was a rest area right there so he pulled into there.
Sure enough, our tire was starting to shred. Lee woke me up and told me what happened. Not something you want to hear far from home and early in the morning. Thankfully we were able to get to the jack and the spare tire. With all the bikes on back you couldn't open the back door. Lee thought we might have to take the rack off and pull out luggage and sleeping bags. Anyway that didn't happen-yay! Lee put on the donut and it had a flat. Again, thankfully we had a bike pump with us. It took Lee a whole five minutes of straight pumping to get it up. We drove for about an hour or so and found a tire place quite easily. Because our van had so much weight in it, the tires were wearing wrong. And our tires weren't very new either. The tire place was super fast and we drove away with three new tires on our van. We had a new tire put on before our trip because it looked like the one below. After that the van drove smoothly.
On our way home we saw the Kansas City temple! That was a fun surprise.
We also saw the St. Louis temple. That was our temple when we lived in Missouri. We saw seven temples on our trip. So fun.
On our way home we were going to stop outside of Nashville in Brentwood, Tennessee. I wanted to stop by the Dave Ramsey show and see it in person. I did not plan the driving time out well and there was no way we could have seen the show live. Oh well, so other time! We arrived back home Wednesday morning. It was great having a day with Lee home to unpack and clean up. We left with the house all picked up and fairly clean (I needed to mop but hadn't). But once we started unloading the van the house quickly became a big mess. Lee and Cal even washed the van and later I vacuumed it out. Ahh...what a nice feeling to have a clean vehicle!
We loved seeing family and loved our trip. We're sad it's over. Here's to next year though! Hope you all are having a great summer!
