Nicaragua Part 3

Day five--Wednesday!  Cal took more pictures.

Breakfast!

Hangout time in the morning.

On our way to an orphanage.

The orphanage was really nice.  I guess a charity in the Netherlands runs it.  They live together in "families". Actually there were only three orphans.  The rest of the kids came during the day or stayed for a long period of time because of abuse at home. We weren't allowed to take pictures of any of the kids.

Some fun swings at the orphanage.

We did some activities with the kids and went on a little tour. Unfortunately we couldn't see in the little houses.

Next up we headed to Surfing Turtle Lodge.  This was a highlight of the trip as fun things go.  Loved it!  The lodge isn't really on an island but the best way to get there is by a short boat ride across a water way, and then horse and carts took us the remainder of the way.

Another volcano in the background!

It was fun riding the cart to the lodge.  A little uncomfortable too depending on how and where you were sitting.

At the lodge we hung out, played, ate lunch and had a little tour.

These bunks are a hostel type room.  Anyone can sleep in here, $10 a night for a bed.  It was awesome because only a couple guests were staying there...or maybe just one.  It was pretty vacant.

Little huts for two people.

It was so pretty there with all the palm trees and thatched roofs.

And no one burned!

This is a jicaro tree.  The jicaro grow tight to the branches like bloated warts. The next day we carved jicaro.

There is a sea turtle sanctuary right by the lodge. The lady who runs it works with a few people and they try and find sea turtle nests and relocate them to this sanctuary.  Poachers like to find the eggs and sell them in town so they also try to contact poachers, buy the eggs from them and then save the eggs. They bury the eggs deep in the ground.  Or the nest I guess.  You can show up any night and help release the baby sea turtles.  On Monday they released over 80 baby sea turtles.  We were there on Wednesday and only had seven baby sea turtles to release.  They were the stragglers and had some deformities.  Hopefully some of them survived the ocean!

Orlando talking to the lady who was overseeing the sanctuary.  She is from Romania I think.  Oh and one of these dogs came out of the ocean with a big fish in its mouth early that afternoon.

They were so cute but smelly!!!

It was amazing seeing the instinct of the baby sea turtles.  They were continually flapping and walking.  And as soon as we set them down they headed straight to the sea, not deviating.

Boat ride back.  Time to go to the ranch.

What a great day!

Yummy dinner.  Fried tortillas, beans and rice and some coleslaw salad and chicken.
